To begin with, most Japanese never know about 'furries','fursuiters',and 'furfags' because Japanese medias don't report it yet.
And Kigurumi (in overseas, this word means 'human style costumes',but original word includes fursuits and mascots) is very popular in Japan, many communes, groups, companies have their own character and its Kigurumi.
In addition, yeah it's very strange,Japanese people think 'Kigurumi and "naka no hito(human in mascot)" are different creature','nobody in a mascot'and'characters are living' , so if a mascot turn or take off his head japanese feel nasty.
So most japanese don't feel weird to Kigurumi(of course some people refuse fursuits and mascots because of fears),parents take their childeren to fursuits all the better for taking a picture.
Yes,it's one of the reasons that Japanese are said that they're living in another world.

Well that sounds nice I guess. In America we have a whole internet culture that centers around hating furries, I am glad that Japan doesn't have that. Thats good.
I just hope that Japan will have some very cool ideas for furries and furry culture in the coming years :)
A lot of the furry art that has come out of Japan has been very awesome and talented. It is nice to know they have a more neutral view. :)
