we made little ones out of big ones on the railroad too. though when we didn't drill holes to stuff sticks down in, we used these things that looked like orage plastic bowls upside down that had two little holes in them, one to pour the liquid in and one the little nitro cap went into. then we had this coil of wire that was how far away we wanted to be, and then we'd get down behind a euclid or other solid object between ourselves and it, and touch the wires to the battery and big cloud of dust and when it settled gravel where the rock that had gotten in the way that was too big to move had been.

If you know what you're doing you can make stuff like that with stuff you'd normally find in an average household kitchen.
