Fictober 2020 11: "I told you so"
Two young foals stood behind the old abandoned house, arguing with one another in harsh whispers. Hillshire, a big bully of a tan unicorn was looming over Morningstar, but the small green pony was pushing back with her magic and trying to stand her ground.
“I'm tellin' ya, there ain't no such thing as a ghost,” the big brute snapped, jerking his head back at the window.
“Oh yeah? Well I heard that some crazy old mare boarded herself up in there and died, and anybody that went in to get the body got chased out of there, stuff bein' thrown at 'em! I hear one didn't even make it out alive!”
“Ah, you're full of manure... if someone disappeared like that it woulda been in the news...”
Morningstar grinned, using her magic to yank a loose board from the window nearby, “Well then, if there's no such thing as ghosts, why don't you go in there and prove it?”
Using his magic to pry the window open, shrieking on its rails, the bigger unicorn huffed, “Fine, I will! Get over here and gimme a boost!”
Wincing in pain as the much larger boy climbed onto her back the mare grunted out, “Would ya hurry up and climb? You weigh a ton!”
With a bit of a struggle, Hillshire pulled his rear in through the window before reaching out and grabbing Morningstar with his magic. The girl let out a yelp as she was yanked quickly into the window and deposited in the dark and musty gloom.
The place was an absolute mess. Cobwebs were so thick in the corners the walls almost seemed rounded somehow. Loose papers were strewn and piled over every available flat surface, some perched precariously in towering, swaying stacks. There were practically mountains of books strewn everywhere.
The foals picked their way carefully through the darkness, every motion stirring up clouds of dust as they made their way into the front room. The two wandered through as quietly as possible until Morningstar suddenly froze in horror, poking Hillshire in the rump and whispering.
“Hi...Hillshire?”
Rolling his eyes, the bigger of the two turned towards her about to shout, but froze. She wasn't looking at him. Her face was twisted by fear as she shivered, pointing a hoof towards the old couch on the far side of the room. There, lying upon it was the shape of a body wrapped in some sort of shroud.
The two of them started backing up when they bumped into a pile of books, dumping them to the floor with a crash! Suddenly, the shape leaped off of the couch, still wrapped in it's shroud! The door behind them flew open with a bang, flooding their part of the room with light as the ghost shrieked at them.
“GET OUT!!!”
A pile of books began to levitate, hurtling in their direction as the two foals crashed together over and over as they raced for the front door! The two of them became wedged against one another for a second until a large book hit each of them flat on the rump with a painful double THWACK!!
Tumbling out of the door and painfully down the porch steps, Hillshire gave a whimper as he tried to stand on a twisted front hoof and slowly limp his way home. All the while, Morningstar darted from side to side behind him, shouting, “I told you so! I knew there was a ghost, but you wouldn't listen, nooooo...”
Back inside the boarded up house, the shape finally managed to struggle out of it's “shroud”, revealing it to be an old floral print sheet. Moondancer grumbled as she stomped over to bolt the front door before she started to repair the organized chaos of her books.
“I swear, every year when it gets close to Nightmare Night, it just keeps getting worse.”
