A study/parody of Proserpine by Dante Gabriel Rosetti finished back in January for https://www.tiesandtails.club (thought I'd uploaded it here already, turns out I hadn't!)
This was commissioned as an event badge for the Ties and Tails Spring festival/Year of the Rat dinner social.
The character, Proserpine (or the Greek myth counterpart Persephone, with whom people may be more widely familiar) was the goddess of agriculture/vegetation who was abducted by Pluto (or the Greek counterpart Hades, ruler of the Underworld, to be his queen.
From Wikipedia:
"When Ceres begged (Pluto's sibling) Jupiter to return her daughter to Earth, he agreed, on condition that Proserpine had not eaten any fruits in Hades (The Underworld). As Proserpine had eaten six pomegranate seeds, it was decreed that she should remain in Hades for six months of the year and be allowed on Earth for the other six"
So in short, Proserpine's return to earth signals the return of spring. Her time spent in the earthly realm represents spring and summer, and her absence, fall and winter.
