It would seem that it was getting dark early on the planet, but why? Was it nighttime already? Did daylight savings time end earlier than usual? Perhaps an eclipse?
Well, that last one was probably true, more or less...
But if one looked to the skies at this time, they would see nothing... nothing but gummy pinkish red, lined with pearly whites, covering the what used to be bright blue, approaching from one direction. From the other direction, they would see... well... the exact same thing.
What would follow next? That depends on one's point of view. Some would see and feel quakes, ground bursting and gushing with lava as the worlds of ivory white pierced through the crust, and giant waves from the oceans being disrupted by these pearly whites.
Others, however, namely the cosmic-sized Kaiju and Parasaur introducing the world to their drooling, hungry maws, would see something more akin to an apple being devoured.

Cosmic ravenous reptiles. Can't argue with that.
