Since I've posted other goofy photos of the Smart car, I wonder how I overlooked this one that I took myself. It's a 1/18 scale die-cast of the actual car. It should be no surprise that its neither the real Shrek nor the real Uncle Scrooge posing for the picture.

mmm, i get conflicting messages about it. i would be alot more interested in getting one if it were installed with a four or five point restraint system as apposed to the industry standard three point, which might save your life...it might also cut your head off (it happens).
The really big issue is leg well intrusion...also is the fact that the rigidity of the body will transfer alot more of the impact to the occupant of the vehicle...youtube has alot of videos of crash tests with the SmartCar...as i said, i dont really mind, i still want one, you cant beat 41 mpg at the price they ask...plus an electric is scheduled for later this year, with an 81 mile range, and the potential for solar charging.

Myself, I would hardly ever be driving highway, so the speed I'd be travelling at would almost never be above 40mph. When I did need to use the highway I'd just be extra careful, I guess. My only beef withe the Smart is that at $23,000 (last time I looked) it is more expensive than you'd figure for a car that small.
build your own from the ground up here http://www.smart.com/is-bin/INTERSH...../Smart_CC-Line
. I went through the SMARTCAR "BUILD IT" feature and for the version i wanted, LOADED was like 18000. The convertable version i could see getting up that high, but the basic versions, not even...if you went through a car dealer they were trying to rip you off...of course that is stateside which might be cheaper, i dont want to draw assumptions as to where you live.
That 23 grand was quoted in a Canadian car magazine. Dealerships may have been willing to make a better deal -- also, the magazine is about three years old now, so prices may have dropped. I recall a streetcar stop poster, recently, with a significant rebate offer than would have brought the price down to around $18,000 I seem to remember. And US prices usually are a little lower than in Canada.
It was listed at a website briefly. Kevin's Hobbies is one of the best on-line shopping sites for die-cast cars I know of. They have an enormous stock and just about the lowest prices & shipping charges (in Canada).
The die-cast is made by Maisto, so that would be a good way to start searching the internet in case Kevin's is out of stock.

I checked out Kevin's Hobbies and found that the Maisto Smart For-Two isn't currently available. They do have the Roadster, but that isn't the same at all. Kevin's does have the AutoArt brand of For-Two, convertible yet, but AutoArt's cost something like $90 or $100 each. I paid under $30 for the Maisto.
Odd isn't it? I guess I was lucky I bought the Smart as soon as it was available. Incidentally, they come with removable body panels! The basic frame is black, but you have a choice of repalcement red, blue or lime green doors, hood, etc. I picked green. The photo I took does't do the colour justice.
My question is often "why on earth does this car NOT have a die-cast model?" You can't get a Ford Taurus or Chrysler Seibring, for instance, though you can get obscure Renaults and almost any sort BMW. There seem to be no Rolls Royces at all. But you can get a Maybach with dub wheels, 22 stereo speakers and 8 wide-screen TVs.
