Fictober 2020 08: "I'm not doing that again"
A dark cloud of acrid black smoke filled the air above the city of Manehattan. Unchecked fires burned all throughout the city as fire ponies raced back and forth from the bay to the burning buildings and back again, reloading the pumping trucks again and again as they waited desperately for help from the Cloudsdale weather ponies.
The once proud city skyline would never be the same. Huge blocks of skyscrapers had been leveled, several others had huge chunks missing from them as though some gigantic creature had taken a bite from them. A few ponies in the morning newspaper had apparently been screaming about some kind of giant monster invading the city, but that was ridiculous.
What wasn't ridiculous was the hundreds of crater-like potholes up and down Mane Street. The massive dips in the street had to be close to twenty feet long each, slightly oval in shape with one side more ragged and broken looking than the other.
The way that carriages and carts were tossed around, it had to be some kind of tornado that had blown through in the night. In a few places, taxi carriages were dangling hundreds of feet off of the ground, embedded in the sides of the few still-standing skyscrapers.
Carts and other equipment at ground level seemed to have been crushed somehow. Maybe the wind pressure of the storm had caused a downdraft so strong that it had flattened the wood into sticks and splinters? It's hard to say.
As the morning stretched on, the black clouds over the city faded to gray and finally a steaming white as the weather team finally showed up to douse the last of the fires. The fire teams looked nonplussed, having gotten the majority of the fires under control before the pegasi had even shown up. They grumbled and grumped while the crowds below waved up at the flying acrobats shoving around rain clouds and cheered their arrival.
The damage lessened as the trail of destruction neared the edge of town. The huge potholes gradually got smaller, almost looking like a dragon's footprint. The fires had been more forgiving here and while there was extensive damage to the buildings, they mostly seemed to be intact.
Farther along, leading into the suburbs outside of the city the potholes took on the appearance of gigantic hoof prints, occasionally embedded in somepony's yard. Private chariots had been crushed or tossed around and holes had been smashed into many rooftops, but nothing that the ponies hadn't repaired before.
Finally, the potholes dwindled away to nothing at the end of a long path that led towards the broken ruins of a once beautiful old farmhouse. A soft groan could be heard coming from the pile as a pile of rubble shifted.
Chocolate Crunch whimpered, blinking in confusion at the sun overhead as the weather team parted the clouds and prepared to leave. He used a hoof to push his blue mane out of his eyes and brushed some of the dust and grime out of his brown fur. His head was pounding and his mouth tasted like road dirt and hot garbage.
Sifting through the rubble for something to drink, he found the still half full bottle from the night before. The label read “Dr. M.'s Birthday Cake Flavored Schnapps, The flavor really GROWS on you!!”. Making a face, the aching earth pony hurled the bottle off into the bushes.
“Yeah. I'm not doing that again..”
