"Once upon a time, Dubranncouer was its own nation, ruled over by a line of warrior-princes, each of whom who styled himself as "Mael." Back then, Dubranncouer was a wild and somewhat untamed land, a land of poets, warlords and wandering priests. All of this changed when, more than a hundred years before the arrival of Duncan the Black, the King Robert II of Charlons led an invasion of the country and subjugated it with extreme violence.
Resistance was led by the Mael Argent, the "Silver Stallion", the last of his line. Handsome and charismatic, Argent raised an army and waged a valiant war against the invaders for over five years, before finally meeting his end at the Battle of Mor Hill. There his army had been finally run to ground by the Charlonsoise cavalry. In a gruelling but doomed battle, Argent was mortally wounded and carried by his retainers to a rocky outcrop, where they made their last stand. In the aftermath, his body was stripped naked and paraded through the streets of Tourcqemont. Robert II was a vindictive man and, despite the protests of his nobility, he destroyed Argent's family. All of his male relatives were put to death or castrated, while his wife and daughters were forced to become priestesses.
When Duncan the Black ascended to power in Dubranncouer, he made a point of erecting a monument to Argant and, on the advice of his wife Brigid, married off one of his sons to Argant's last living descendant. The knights of Dubranncouer, mostly descended from nobles who had been punished for their loyalty to Argant by being stripped of most of their lands, were once more restored to prestige. Thus, the memory of Argant was avenged."
