Sort of! Doppelgangers in this setting have to consume at least one thing to exist even remotely properly. A lot of them only eat one thing (typically a person who they then take the appearance of), but some of them end up killing and taking the essence of multiple things- those are Amalgamate doppelgangers! Often times doppelgangers that start off only eating an animal end up killing a person and becoming sapient because of it later, resulting in something like what Guard here is!

That actually sounds pretty awesome. Do they have any preference? or do they consume the first thing they can find?

Generally speaking, after they get morals, most of them don't like to consume much (there are exceptions, mind you! One of the girls who's an amalgamate doppelganger is essentially devouring as many people as she can just to say she has).

The generalized understanding according to the limited research scientists have done into doppelgangers claim that they are always looking to move themselves up in status or on the food chain. So it's believed that a doppelganger who devours, say, an employee in a business will have a strong desire to devour the boss of that business, and then that boss's boss, etc.

But! When they first start off (before they devour anything at all) doppelgangers are pretty mindless and phase in and out of existence. At that point, they have absolutely no preference on what they devour, as long as it has essence and can allow them to exist.
