In general, it has become an over-competitive thing where illustrators are just flexing their hardest rather than it being a fun challenge. I've fallen in that trap in previous years and just pushed myself way too hard and it lead to a lot of self-imposed anxiety and stress. The charm of it faded very quickly.
But the biggest issue for me was when Jake Parker threatened to sue someone over the use of the name when they wanted to sell their own work, only to then essentially plagiarize Alphonso Dunn's inking technique book for his own Inktober inking book. That just doesn't sit well with me.
