Geelong Sack Xander McMichael and Appoint Dwayne Payne as Coach for 2021:
There was always going to be fallout at Geelong after losing to 8th seed Orange in the 1st Elimination Final. It was Geelong’s 4th Finals loss in 3 finals appearances under Xander McMichael. And while most clubs would not be happy with that, Geelong who are run by Jack Knight were the most likely to drop the axe on McMichael for it and they did.
The Monday after the game, The news broke that McMichael after coaching the team for 4 seasons and a record of 38-40 as coach had been given the boot and that Geelong were in the market for another coach. While many expected Geelong to take a long time to pick their guy, The Generals had him in the wings ready to go.
By Wednesday, Geelong had announced Former Gold Coast Player, Dwayne Payne as their coach for 2021 onwards. The Rat who had been coaching Gosford in the Sydney FAFL competition since 2018 said it was “It's a great honor to be appointed coach of an FAFL Club, Let alone one in a city as passionate as Geelong. This is an exciting team to be taking over as this is a team that has the potential to go all the bloody way if we get our cards right and frankly I'm glad to be the coach going forward.”
Payne acknowledged that it was a pretty fast transition from being a player to being a coach all things considered but that he saw that as an advantage as he felt that it meant that he had a better grasp on the modern game plans compared to older coaches.
Payne also felt that he could bring guts to a team that he felt was sorely lacking guts. He would say that “For this team to be a true contender, We need to be feared by the rest of the competition. They have to hate the prospect of playing against us. That is the only way you get an upper hand in finals and by the way that Geelong has played in Finals, This team is as feared as a Baby Kitten. I hope to change that.”
During the Q&A session between Payne and the Press, The prospect was brought up that Payne could lure Long Time Friend and Gold Coast Hero, Michael Vander-Beck to the team as a Forward Coach to replace the rest of the coaching staff who also got the axe when McMichael did. Gold Coast have reported that they plan to keep the Kangaroo Rat in their coaching staff under Bryan Shadowolf but acknowledged that his 3 year contract he signed at the end of 2017 to transition from a player to a coach was expiring at the end of the 2020 season.
The Press Conference ended with a war of words between Owner Jack Knight and Sacked Coach, Xander McMichael. McMichael had managed to get into the Press Conference Room. Mainly because the team did the Conference in the Public Café area of the Social Club Stand. McMichael would not mince words at Knight before the Dragon demanded security took the sacked coach out.
Mr. Payne would give a few words of his own at McMichael leading to the following words to be directed at the former coach.
“Buddy, If you could have gotten the job done, You'd still be here now and you wouldn't be getting an earful every time you failed to get said job done. Why not instead of attacking your former employer, Go find another coaching job. I know some Bottom 4 teams who would be glad to hire you.”
The Press Conference then wrapped up. There is a huge job ahead of Payne before the 2021 season but if he can stick the landing and avoid doing what his predecessor did, He should be in that coaches seat for a long time.
