For this magic system, most likely they'd used mineral magic to infuse with the raw material, or soak it in liquid magic for a similair effect. The vapors and mucus might work, but I imagine something that soaks in/sticks to stuff like liquid and mineral would work well. *nod nod* This system has a lot of possibilities!
