This is a cross-pein hammer that I have salvaged from the community dumpster. The head of it was caked in rust and the handle was cracked, moldy, and had electrical tape on it.
I broke the head off the handle, punched out the wood from the eye, left it in evapo-rust for 3 days to remove the rust.
While the rust was slowly being removed, I had set to work on making the handle from a stake I found near the rail road tracks. It's one of those pointed stakes they staple ribbon tape to.
Now it looks like this and it works probably just as well as it used to before some one threw it away to be a waste.

Ok. I also reuse discarded railway equipment into things. I have an 1800s railway spike I would like to carry with me in my drawing kit as a paper weight for when I draw at the park, but the rust gets all over the paper. What could I use to prevent that? I have seen this remedied with wax, but am unsure of what type to use.
To remove the rust from it, I'd use an acid. White vinegar works well as an acid in use of removing rust, but it takes a long time to remove it all. I'd try 5 days in a vinegar bath.
Wax is a good way to coat the metal in order to keep it from rusting further, but I think in this case it will just smear over the paper.
It might be very good to remove the rust entirely by brushing it with a steel wire brush every so often in the vinegar.

After that, when the rust is removed and you get bare metal, lightly dab on oil to the surface. Not a whole lot, just enough to give the entire thing a very thin film. This will protect it.
