You can find 2nd hand cameras on ebay for good prices that'll have much better optics and a good macro-mode. Lighting's key though for close ups though, I'm learning. Must use brighter lights as the area captured is less so there's less light to create the image from.
I made an Ikea light-tent for my paw-pad shots. Really need some more lamps around it though.
