This is a paint-over of a sketch of my fursona. There was more detail in the back and thought balloons.
I felt like sketching my fursona again today, but decided, rather, to colorize one of my earlier works to match the colors and fur of my forthcoming fursuit.

I used layers, starting with the pencil sketch and then added colors and added shadows and highlights to the colors of his base fur, floof, and the folds in his shirt.

This was orginally scanned into PaintShopPro and then saved as a PNG and opened in Painter Essentials 7
I used different brushes to give the right texture. I used coarse dry brush for the table, fur brushes for Charlie's fur, camel hair for general coloring and then palette and just add water blenders.
