One of the more elaborate buildings on the Savannah riverfront, surrounded by old warehouses and storing areas devoted to cotton. Well, not entirely, a darker purpose not everyone knows about regarding this area is it's barracoons used for storing slaves. The fact THAT activity went on in the same area now occupied by tourist shops, I admit, makes more then a bit uncomfortable. If only the tourists realised the kind of hardship and suffering that went on in this courner of the city.
The irony of it all, of course, is that many of the shops are run by members of Georgia's African American population. Think about it for a second, making money in the same place your ancestors may have been sold as a commodity. It shoes how far things have come, but I really wish more people knew the real history of this place.
