These karafuto-ken dogs took part in the first Japanese Antarctic expedition in 1957.
The expedition had to be interrupted due to the sudden start of a powerful snowstorm. The team of people was evacuated by helicopter, and 15 sled dogs were tied with chains and left at the station, planning to return for them in a few days. However, the return to the station took place only 11 months later. Seven dogs could not break off the chain and died of hunger, eight more were missing. When the people returned, only Taro and Jiro met them at the station.
Based on this story, two films were shot - "Antarctica" and "Eight Below".
