My favorite kind of owl (Barn) just sounds like a boiling tea kettle. My second favorite (Snowy) does hoot sometimes, but they sound like they need a throat lozenge. It's kind of disappointing.
My third favorite (Short-eared) does actually hoot like you would expect, though.
