Another routine matinence check. You would have been nervous if you hadn't done this a million times before- the flashy job description didn't mean that the work wasn't dry and tedious after you've been launched into space every week for a few years now. It would've been a big deal maybe, 50 years ago? But now, satellites dotted the sky like little blinking far-away stars, and somebody needed to go up there and make sure that they're okay. If you were a more poetic person, you would've thought of it as romantic.
The only thing different about this time is that the satellite you were visiting was an absolute dinosaur- Even ground control had no idea how it was still transmitting signals. Recalling what your crackly radio told you hours before- your objective is to check the battery, hull, orbit speed, and then fly back. It wasn't a particularly important satellite- The trip was mostly to figure out what in the world the satellite was actually transmitting at all. It seemed to have worked itself into the network of satellites responsible for broadcasting radio and TV signals, but all of the channels it was responsible for distributing were just... Static. Seemingly random.
Lost in thought, you were suddenly brought back to reality by your spaceship letting you know "You have arrived at your destination", in the same monotone gps voice you could find in any car manufactured after 2011. Heaving yourself out of the cockpit, you find yourself in the familliar coldness of space- through your helmet, the satellite, gently blinking, seems to be shrouded in mysterious darkness. You shake off that familliar sense of uneasiness and get to work. You're connected to your spaceship with a long thin cord, floating precariously through space... and once you reach the satellite, you need to locate a hatch, a platform, something. The satellite towers over you a good 5 feet at the very least- Small compared to other satellites, but still big enough and strange enough to make you feel... unsettled. Before you know it, bumping into the floating, blinking, whirring metal husk... It makes a sound.
"Oof." It sounds like a human voice. You're frozen as the satellite slowly turns around, blue-and-red striped retractable limbs slowly stretching out, and a simple robotic face, right smack in the center of the thing, yawns to life. You've never seen anything like it, and now you're face to face, uncomfortably close to this blinking relic of a living satellite. It's eyes flutter open after a long yawn.
"Oh... Hello, human!" It says, and it's voice sounds as if it's made of radio clips strung together arbitrarily- not computer generated like the gps in your ship, but staticy human voices layered on top of each other one word after another. "What brings you here?" It continues. You notice that the voice is coming from inside the headset within your helmet as it's mouth moves.
"I- I- I- Can you understand me?" You manage to stutter out.
"Yes," It says. "Last time a human came up here was a long time ago," They say.
"O-oh. I'm just here to check on some things and- and- i'll-" You say, flustered, unsure of what to say. Some irrational part of you was worried about making a bad impression.
"I love company. I wish you would send little humans up here more often," The Satellite continued, "You're all so friendly. I've been listening to your radio and watching your broadcasts for a long time now."
"Oh... Okay." You say, flinching when the Satellite makes a sudden movement to grab your hands with their oversized mitten paws.
"You don't need to repair anything. But can you stay here for a little while? I'm very lonely."
"Well, I- I do have- I have a..." Halfway through you forget what you were saying, and you notice blush creeping up your hot face and onto your ears. The Satellite was so calm and yet so huge compared to you- floating through still, calm space, smiling serenely... It seemed magical, somehow. Like they were a guardian angel to earth or something. Maybe you were being silly- Maybe it was just the stars twinkling in the background, or the strange and impossible creature inches away from your face, holding your trembling hands effortlessly like you were a doll... But it seemed so overwhelmingly special. You almost forgot your mission.
The Satellite wordlessly pulls you closer into a hug, and their metal hull is surprisingly warm, and glossy like a fresh coat of paint on a car. You can feel it through your thick and heavy space suit, and your cheek pressed against the inside of your helmet fogs up the glass as the giant Satellite cuddles you closer with their arms and legs.
"Mmm." Satellite holds you closer. "You humans are so sweet and cuddly."
"B-buh..." You sputter, "Satellite, um, this is, nice and all but i have to get.. i have to get home, to earth, and i have a lot to explain to uh... ground control? Do you know what that- nevermind, I just..." You continue, flustered, and you're interrupted.
"Dont, worry, I'll let you go, silly. But can you stay a little longer?" Satellite said calmly, almost sounding sad.
"Yeah..." You say, letting the sentient Satellite pull you closer and cuddle you with their big soft feet and warm mittens pinning you to their pleasantly warm, whirring body, as the mechanical parts softly purred against each other, vibrating the entire robotic creature slightly. Internal fans seemed to have kicked in. Your heart is beating hard, you're blushing, and your thoughts are racing- but it feels so nice to have this giant comforting robot petting your helmet gently with their huge mitteny paws. The nice, pleasant, constant pressure of their soft, huge feet pressed against you as they wrapped around you like you were a little pillow made you want to fall asleep out there- but you feared if you went to sleep here you would never make it back home. It was actually a nice thought, staying out here, drifting in comforting, warm, endless space... But you push the thought out of your head. Just a couple more minutes before I have to tell the Satellite that I have to go home.... just a couple more minutes....
wahh! a story with Satellite! i hope you enjoy!
JSYK, i know nothing about orbits, space, gravity, radio signals or technology whatsoever so most of the technical stuff is just pulled out of my ass XD but i hope its at least a little bit accurate! thanks for reading and i hope you like this story about snuggling an interstellar space probe ><
