Meet my new OC, Sigma.
Sigma's species is classed as a Synth, an open species created by the amazing
Vader-San . I've fallen in love with Vader-San's synth species and just had to make one for myself.
However, Sigma in particular is different from regular synths, with design inspiration from 1980's cars and consumer electronics. A big inspiration was the Casio FX-120, a scientific calculator that featured a Vacuum Fluorescent Display, a brushed stainless steel (but is actually plastic) housing, and a very angular retro shape. Other inspirations were the grilles and shapes found in various 80s cars like the Citroen BX 19 Digit, DMC Delorean, Lamborghini Athon etc. His organic-inspired anatomy is heavily reptilian, with inspiration from snakes, velociraptors and crocodiles.
His name, Sigma, is derived from the greek letter of the same name, used in mathematics to represent "The sum of all things". This is a reference to his calculator-inspired design, and is the kind of retro name you'd hear in an 80s product.
His face is a large dot matrix vacuum fluorescent display, capable of displaying various facial expressions, as well as numbers, images and even monochromatic video. His chest has a CRT monitor used mainly for diagnostic and maintenance purposes, as it usually displays a terminal or CLI. It is capable of full colour video and imagery if desired. Internally, he runs on rechargeable batteries that can last for up to 3 days. He can plug himself into a power outlet to recharge, but can also generate additional electricity with his Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), a small gas-turbine generator similar to that used in aircraft. The compressed air from this APU can also boost his pneumatic muscles for extra strength. He is therefore capable of consuming jet fuel directly in order to use the APU when needed. However, he can also consume any organic material, especially meat, to generate biofuel to run the APU. This is especially useful in off-grid survival situations, where there is no access to electricity and jet fuel.
His 'ears' are antennas that can pick up a wide range of radio and microwave signals, and can point them in any orientation to maximize reception. This allows him to intercept and decipher any form of communications (WiFi, cellular, radio broadcasts etc), and even locate where the signal is being transmitted, which all comes in handy during his reconnaissance missions.
His Lore:
Sigma is a first-generation replica Synth created by Stecha (The "Science and TECHnology Accelerator" program, a human-government organization aiming to accelerate technology to defend human civilization from multi-universe lifeforms) who reverse-engineered a captured synth who was a peaceful multi-universe explorer that happened to discover Earth.
Using the dual-compute design principle from the successful living plane project (where their mind consists of a biological brain and flight computers working together in unison), Sigma uses an AI processing unit working in unison with traditional CPUs available at the time. This gives him consciousness that focuses on decision making, while the CPU focuses on automating tasks, conduct calculations and running programs.
The APU and the biofuel digestion system were also features taken from the living plane project, and was found to significantly improve long term survival.
Being a first generation synth replica, he was constructed with the limited technology of the 1980s, and was mainly used as a research prototype to aid the design of the second generation synths of the 1990s. After he became obsolete in research, he was deployed as a contractor for the special forces, focusing in infiltration, reconnaissance and assassination roles. This was possible thanks to his incredible agility, strength, precision and instantaneous decision making. By the year 2020, he is contracted as a body guard to protect another first generation project from Stecha, Sebascelisc, the first genetically modified living plane.
Artist note:
This was the first time i drew anything like this. I had to learn how to draw:
- Using GIMP and a Wacom tablet instead of my iPad
- A humanoid creature instead of a snake/plane
- Glowing features, perspective features, other unique GIMP tools.
- Layering in a way to get the desired effect, especially for his face
- A half-decent background that also glows
This took many many hours to draw due to my lack of art skill. But the fact I have achieved so many new things here makes me very happy.

Hah xD, exactly my kind of joke! You get a free cookie for that (via web browser, fellow beeper).
Thank you! :D . This design is pretty much an assembly of my mind’s favourite things. Old tech (especially old displays), reptiles, and yes, the long face. Long snoots are just so adorable to me <3 . It also emphasises the display’s filaments for more retro aesthetics, and its facial features are really expressive too. It also gives that predator vibe. Like, snakes, crocodiles, velociraptors, birds etc. Long snoot is best snoot <3
