Did you ever visit Tottori while you were in Japan? I've never been, but I'm just curious.
(It's the hometown of the creator of this series, and full of Kitty Hawk-looking dunes. It also has lots of Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro statues... whether in one place or all over town, I'm not sure.)
