Adult specimen can grow around 30 feet in length, and generally weigh between 350 and 400 pounds, with males generally being slightly lighter and shorter. Their head is slender and elongated like that of a snake, but reminiscent of a white dragon, with protrusions on the back of the head and prominent teeth. Each serpent has uniquely patterned blueish dorsal scales and ventral scales so smooth that they are hard to distinguish from a distance. A variety in shades on their scales creates the illusion of an intricate mosaic pattern on their back. Like cobras, Thagaveen ice serpents use their hoods to communicate with each other and the unnerve potential attackers. Despite its snake-like form, the Thagaveen ice serpent has no forked tongue, but whisker-like protrusions above its mouth that allow it to detect vibrations in the water.
