Raymond's right: it was a rear-curtain flash, about a 2.5s exposure.
Lighting was three strobes and a reflector. Two SB-600s, one on each side, about 15 feet away, high up and slightly behind him. One SB-900 in front about chest high, maybe 10 feet away. A silver reflector at his feet completed the lighting. Camera had my 10mm lens on it, locked down on a tripod as close to the ground as I could get it.

Nikon D300, the lens was a Sigma 10-20mm I picked up a couple months back and have been having way too much fun with.
I'm mostly self taught, modulo a few workshops I've gone to. A couple years back someone pointed me to Strobist (strobist.blogspot.com) and I started going through his lessons on basic off-camera lighting, and I've kind of worked up from that.
