As I understand my mythology... kitsune can hide a lot of their nature but they always have a "tell" which is visible. Unless they really take great pains to conceal it. Something like tails, ears, or eyes...
But it was really just because that line came to mind immediately on seeing Mercedes looking like she was walking into a noir film. :) And I'd wager there's other private detectives with the Sight out there since it'd be really useful for the weird cases nobody else wants to touch. The kind where actual useful advice starts with "So do you have a lot of salt on hand... sea salt or rock salt, natural salt..."
