Whatever one's fantasies, reality is what you started out as when your mama pushed hard enough. In my case, I'm Italian by birth, and grew up with my grandmama making me decent central Italian food. This picture came out of that when at MFF a bunch of us went to the Olive Garden for a meal. Olive Garden is Italian the same way chop suey is Chinese, so when I go to such places I tend to get the same thing: Spaghetti with no sauce, butter and olive oil on the side. KinkyTurtle was in our little group, and he was inspired to draw this for me after dinner.

Someone--Ashtoreth of all people--once described Olive Garden as the Denny's of Italian food: mainstream, simple, marginally expensive but intended for people who didn't really know what they were ordering.
Me? I'm all about the pasta soaked in butter with seafood, really good 'shrooms, and enough garlic to make it come out of your pores. Marinara is overrated.

Really? I'm surprised. I was in Naples, in the Navy, in 1977. There was a restraunt that every sailor went to. It was called "The Cave". The entrance looked like a big mouth, holding a door! (at least that's how I remember). It was inexpensive, never more than four or five dollars; and the food was great. Their Spaghetti had meat sauce mixed in it. No meatballs. (They might have been catering to American taste.) The Pizza? I remember ordering peperroni. The Pepperonis were almost floating on top of the Pizza, there was alot of olive oil on it. And we had to drink "Peroni" beer. Thanks for the education.
