Tell your friend to purchase really good pet insurance, full coverage.
Retrievers, especially Golden's are extremely prone to Cancer, neurological and metabolic disorders, and a wide range of joint problems (especially their knees), all of which could cost thousands to treat. They also like to eat anything that fits in their mouth, including things that aren't digestible/edible (foreign-body surgery can cost a LOT of money).
Better safe than sorry...
