The bottom of the hilt can be pressed in which "unlocks" the blade from the hilt. The blade can then fold backwards and slides down the hilt until it is locked into position again. This state is known as the "Defensive Slash Mode". Defensive Slash mode is mostly used to block heavier attacks but can also be used for quick slashes.
