Nope, you have to go by the stars, position of the sun, how certain types of mosses grow on plants and rocks, water flow patterns, etc... :3
On a more serious note, his jacket puts me in mind he might also be some sort of maritime cartographer. The trim on the sleeves looks like a ship's wheel.
I'm also getting the impression of impending danger, given the pupils in the monk's eyes are reaaaaly contracted >_>

I love how that little mouse is trying to be helpful. The number of maps certainly shows he came overly prepared, although I have feeling the term 'We're not lost, just taking a detour' comes to mind. Nice work with the shafts of light highlighting them and the illumination from his amulet. There is a lovely soft warmth from this picture. WELL DONE😎⭐⭐⭐⭐
