I know it's not furry but it's peopley and important.
I spent my teen years in northern Florida... which is basically the south because it's still in the gun toting bible-belt region. Being that I'm half black and half white I was treated, to put it nicely, like shit. Even though I'm 25 and wasn't born in the days of the Civil Rights... and even though I didn't live in a small town (Jacksonville is one of the largest cities)... being a minority I was still branded as if I were an animal. In school our tests had are races printed on them, some of our teachers graded us a lot harder and we had to work harder than the other children, and they were always surprised when we were placed in honors classes. In public, my brother and I were stared at and have been followed around stores because clearly being a minority means we steal apparently; and because of the way I look I've often mistaken for another race because people seem to have the need to classify everyone. I've been mistaken for Hispanic, Brazilian, and even Muslim (since I've always gotten put in the "random check" line at the airport). This year I was driving and there was an accident ahead to where a police officer stepped out to direct us around it. I was actually even stopped and questioned on whether or not I spoke English and about my identity (and that was here in MA).
I know that it may be hard for some people to understand as they say... "Sure if we're asked we wouldn't mind", but honestly... you'll never be asked and from someone that has been persecuted against for most of their life... I can honestly tell you that it's humiliating and painful.
So I wear this proudly against SB 1070. Yes there is an illegal immigrant issue but it's targeting the symptom and not the problem. It's going to hurt lots of immigrants and citizens a like.

No it doesn't sound stupid. Like I wish people would just treat each other like humans instead of having to categorize people like they are animals. I know in MA people seem to have a thing against Italians in part of the state... Like it really doesn't make any sense to be since I treat everyone as individuals.
The law is a step forward, conceder that if you where a Illegal in Mexico, You be impresioned for up to 20 years before seeing a Judge and deported. We are the only Country that allows Illegals any rights at all. This has to stop. We are breaking our governments bank roll over people who come here illegally. I do feel sad for all the Legal visitors that have to deal with the new law, But the illegal one need to go back home.
Well imprisoning someone else doesn't make other countries want to be nice to us anymore than they do now. My friends over seas ask why we are spinning into a chaotic mess. Illegals don't have as many rights here as people think... though our country was basically made by illegals and was purely developed on immigrants. The problem is is that we think we are this superior nation but we aren't we are sort of the mixing pot of all the other countries... you would think we'd all learn and develop a fairly functional country since we are ideally here because our ancestors wanted a better life. At the rate we're going we'll be in another depression with all the other countries hating our guts and who just watch us crumble. The thing about the bill though is that it won't just effect immigrants... but it will effect all the citizens in that region. To live in fear and to be required to carry personal information isn't living at all. They've already stopped an American born citizen, took him away in cuffs, and jailed him until his wife could bring his birth certificate. Which she brought her own as well in fear that they would detain her.
They are requiring more than the standard drivers license. A driver has already been stopped and they required a birth certificated. Most states require you to have some id... but carrying things like birth certificate, ssn cards, and even passports are considered reaally risky and are advised against. Also people that are caucasian are most likely not going to get stopped because people think tan when it comes to being illegal. Meaning only tans will be questioned which is offensive. Like take the time I was questioned... the cop said before even asking for id was do I speak english. Even though i had military stickers on my window, said, "yes?" when he approached my window... apparently since I have curly hair and tan skin... appearing to be spanish... I can't speak english??? Then... so what... he assumes all spanish speaking people don't know english... which is doubly offensive. And asked if I was a citizen... when I replied that I was highly offended and he asked how my name was pronounced (which my last name is french)... he thought he would try and correct himself by asking my nationality but at that point he had dug himself a massive hole.
Whether or not you are mandated to carry something or not... which most states require you to at least have a license. If you're in the race or look like the race being targeted... you're going to feel offended. And for a person like me... I would never wish it upon any race honestly... I actually care about everyones rights and feelings. I'd be just as offended if it was NY trying to get rid of the Canadians.

I served in the Army for 21 years, been all over the world and I have been stopped many times and questioned many times. If you simple go with the flow life becomes easier. But if you take offence, that will cause the PD to suspect you even more. Myself I am Portuguese and I have no worries if I get stopped and questioned.
So you are insulted by the fact that people have to "classify" others, but you feel insulted when someone mistakes your race?...that is a bit hypocritical...

It makes it illegal for an alien to be in Arizona without the right documents. I don't like the fact that they can be charged for not having the card on the mat all times, but it is a good idea to try to fix the problem. Perhaps a good middle-ground would be make a database so that if someone doesn't have ID they can bee looked up. If that isn't a decent alternative what is? What do you propose?

I think classifying period is wrong... why can't we just be humans? It's not being hypocritical at all. I'm offended that they have to put me in a category period regardless of what race it is even if it's my own. While the phrase "It's not what's on the outside that matters"... is old and lame... it's really true. Rather than placing anyone in a specific category how about just treating them as though they are human that's all... it's just that simple. It's 2010 and racial stereotyping is old. What's the point of categorizing people if we don't even "behave" like what we are stereotyped as.
And from what I've read of the bill... what makes one suspicious that someone's an illegal? There are more than just Mexican Illegals. But when you hear the word illegal... I'm pretty sure that even you thing tan skin. This bill also has an added aftermath. Now all teachers with accents as well as ethnic education classes are being ceased of. It also places officers in schools to track down illegals through students. If a student is suspected of having English as his or her second language they are taken in for questioning. Which not only interferes with the education of the students and the process of teaching but it also will leave a lot of orphans because even if their family's illegal they aren't if they were born here.
Also it's not necessarily going to actually FIX the problem and actually make it worse. The large number of illegal immigrants are working in farming, construction, and the food industry. Companies are ship them in by numbers or tempting them in (as we've done plenty of times throughout history since immigrants are the ones that actually built our foundation) because they don't work for living wages and work without benefits. Companies have more power than simple laws... so no... it won't bring back the job market especially when they are the ones sending most jobs over seas and demanding cheap labor. Also if the farmers indeed lose their immigrant workers they will have to hire Americans at a higher wage since no one can live on a pickers wage... hell we can't even survive on minimum wage or even office desk job wages anymore. This will increase the cost so the farmers can keep a profit and the average buyer will either cease buying their goods because they can't afford it or buy the cheaper product that is being shipped from over seas... which will cause the farmers to then have to shut down and firing their employees.
The violence rate will not end. First of all if you're a drug runner... one of the big bad illegals, you aren't going to go down without a fight. They are going to do anything in their powers to stay in the country. Which means more murder and more identity theft. Since legal citizens and just citizens with Mexican descends or tan skin for the Native Americans that will be hit by this bill as well... are going to all have to carry identification as well... that makes Arizona mug and murder capital of the world. Don't have citizenship... easy knock off someone who does or is a native born. Secondly... arizona also passed a law that allows people to carry concealed weapons without registration. The white supremacy groups already have posted their calls of "they are now fair game". Since now illegals won't report crimes if they are mugged, raped, or worse because they are afraid of being deported. I've lived in a city with the white supremacy... trust me that don't ask for citizenship before they kill, beat, and torture. They have heads in high places as well so a lot of the chaos they did in the city I lived in... they got away with it. And since they'll just be looking at skin color a lot of citizens will get hurt too; and in places like Arizona it won't be new and won't be reported. SB 1070 also has a connection with a group called FAIR (they are against illegals and legals alike)... which is founded by a man named John Tanton (of Michigan) who has ties with the white supremacy... why Jan Brewer would sign anything with that kind of taint is beyond me... it's more of a bias and chaotic bill than people think.
So rather than turning Arizona into 1940s Germany... they could regulate companies and force them to hire on our soil... well you'd also have to get them to not ship labor over seas because that's what they'll do with out illegals. They'll just build factories in Mexico's territory instead. Then for the smaller and more honest places... have them do tighter background checks and also they'll need to divide those that want citizenship because being an illegal doesn't make you bad. And you can't shut all borders since we'll suffer globally since other countries will then hate us. There's a chunk of those that just have expired working visa... which shows some idea that they wanted to be legal.
And have you ever thought (on a less serious but still marginally serious note)... wouldn't you rather have you ethnic foods authentic? I don't know about you but I rarely go out to eat; so when I do I want it to be authentically made. If I'm going to pay the price it has to be quality... lol.

Ok...first. People have been labeling people since the beginning of society. While it is old, it certainly isn't new. I'm sorry to say that I am tired of hearing people whine about being stereotyped while the shoe definitely fits. Everyone is victim of it sooner or later in their life. I could post my own sob storied about being labeled as a homo fag, or even better my struggles with being labeled a moron in preschool while I go onto this day getting honors and deans list every semester at college, but I don't. Everyone has their fight, but some are just ALOT more vocal and bitchy about it than others.
