The hastily put together defenses and buildings is something I find great value in. It takes a lot more imagination to create something dilapidated rather then new!
I must also add, I love the stonework pattern used on the last panel.
Also the background while simple is a great addition for the foreground focus.
Stonework is so difficult to get right in my opinion.
