From a personal standpoint, I think it would work akin to RL helmets, with the opening on the bottom being large enough to fit the muzzle in, and the strap going under the chin. In a fictional setting, I suppose you could get different sizes and shapes for the ear pockets.
But then again, some artists in the fandom have some amazing concepts for furry helmets, props to them!

A motorcycle and a scooter nice. I love the detail you've put into their helmets. The perspective really makes this impressive. The lights on full shine and the skies transition into sunset really sets the mood. You still capture the feel of speed nicely with the blurring of the fence, the roughness of the front tyres and the sweep marks on the road. EXCELLENT work😎⭐⭐⭐⭐
