I just saw this yesterday, and my opinions are pretty much summerised in this:

I know what'cha mean. I knew the moment I saw the trailers for it that Avatar would be nothing more than the latest thing to show off the high tech sorcery of CG imagery.
And on a related note, Avatar is NOT the all time highest grossing film in history. When adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind is the all time highest grossing in history, and Star Wars: A New Hope is second. Avatar falls all the way to 24th.
On seeing that its a cheap rip off in that link you provided, I say it should be bumped to 240th. But *sighs* that's what movie makers seem to do these days. Rip off older ideas, or just make crappy re-makes of other movies.

Most movies are formulaic. I personally liked atlantis, then again i have a soft spot for failed disney movies. Song of the south, verboten on American shores, Atlantis, totally underated film, but i liked it anyway, Treasure planet, which most people dont even remember having been made... for some reason if it doesnt involve talking animals and pink sissydoll princesses then its no good, okay, she was a princess, but she kicked ASS so it deviates from the formula...then again, i loved sinbad, and wished they had made more movies, they didnt, and screw them for that...not that it was a disney movie...
I'm watching Treasure Planet tonight X3
I tend to like movies that have an atmosphere to them. I really dug Atlantis, actually, because of the visual splendour and the fact that it went after an older audience and thus had a rather unique air to it. I also really like stuff like Bambi.

Sorry, didnt mean it to come across that i didnt like the other type, im a furry after all O.O but its just that those seem to be the only movies that really get attention.. i was rather fond of brother bear though and it got very little attention...
Also, do not bother with Atlantis the sequel. i am almost positive by the way that it is structured that it was a tv series that flopped before it made it onto disney channel but had enough money invested in it they edited it into a movie to recoup their losses...

At least it didn't take the format of 'Atlantis BABIES' like so many others XD
There were a couple series that were aborted and made into films. It's bizarre. The only decent sequels were like... Lion king 2, Rescuers Down Under, and Toy Story 2. And the first one is debatable.

To the best of my knowledge *having never seen the performance theater version* the lion king 2 turned out well because the story was already part of the broadway play...
There were scenes that i think would have made the movie better, but were left on the cutting room floor to make it less adult...such as the scene where Nuka dies, his last words being "atleast i finally made you notice me", and the scene where Kira commits suicide rather then be saved by the daughter of someone she hates...
Then you have lionking 1 1/2...which decides "i know, lets piss all over the series thats made us the most money in a decade" and that thing at "The land" at epcot which...you know...you have Earth Children, and hippies, and new agers, and bless them.........Then you have the writers of captain planet...

I don't think Lion king 2 was based on the Broadway play... It was based on Romeo and Juliet, though, like the first was based on Hamlet.
But yeah, a few scenes were changed on ways to make it less adult... Although Kira debatably still commits suicide in the final version, it's just less obvious.

Avatar is good if you've never seen a planetary romance before. But I'm a fan of animation, and anime, so I've seen this kind of thing a lot.
I've seen better parables, too: You really don't need someone literally saying 'I don't see why these natives refuse to adapt to our way of life' for the moral to be apparent.
Kind of like how FF7 is awesome if it's your first JRPG ever.

I recall reading an article comparing Disney's Atlantis to the anime Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. Without giving away spoilers I will simply say there were a LOT of similarities. AND Nadia came first (1990).....although in all fairness the story of Nadia is loosely based (very loosely based) on Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870).....WHICH by the way was made into many film adaptations, one of the better ones being....surprise surprise, Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)....and we're back at Disney. Full circle. ^_^
