Summer, 1372
As the sun began to reach its full summer heat, a full-grown dragon and two whelps soared over the turquoise-clear ocean waters towards the shimmering white island ahead. The dragons flew by dancing pods of dolphins, shimming schools of fish, and even the occasional human sailing cog, then passed over white sandy beaches with basking seals, then lush rich temperature forests before finally reaching the limestone mountains in the center. Lead by the older dragon, the trio of wyrms headed through the rocky pinnacles and canyons to a large cavernous entrance in the midst of a fern-filled watershed where they landed.
Kharriana folded her wings and beamed with pride as Rargesteyae and Asaewath descended lightly behind her. Their first long-distance trip had been a success.
*Welcome to Behran Island, my darlings!* The green dragon welcomed her children.
*This was your home, mother?* Rargesteyae asked.
*This was my home. Where I hatched and was raised, alongside your aunt, Khraemwa. I gave this cave to her when I joined with your father.*
*Where is Aunt Khraemwa?*
*She’s out hunting by the sea for our supper.* Kharriana smiled at the thought of her sister scrambling around like a mad dragoness trying to harvest enough food to make them all fat. *She knows we’re visiting.*
*Why do you only take us fishing when dad’s not around?* Asaewath cut in.
Kharriana chuckled.
*Your father doesn’t really like the sea-I think it had something to do with an old trip to the Northlands-and he’s at best a mediocre fisherman. Funny enough, our first romantic meeting was a fishing trip and he was just so bad at it.*
Rargesteyae and Asaewath giggled. *I’m gonna tell dad!* The green whelp exclaimed.
*Please don’t tell your father that I could gather a hundred cod from the oceans before he is even able to catch a single hagfish from the Rapidan.* Their mother teased. *It’ll hurt his pride.*
Rargesteyae and Asaewath laughed.
*Has father ever visited your home?* Rargesteyae asked.
*He does, and comes back every so often.*
*Does he like it?*
Kharriana smiled. *Your father finds my island beautiful. But as he puts it, he took the greatest treasure from it, and it’s a long trip over.*
*Aww* Asaewath chirped.
*Why didn’t you stay on Behran Island?* Rargesteyae continued.
*Because though my homeland is beautiful, that beauty is ending. The humans keep coming closer. When I was your age, there used to be enough space on Behran Island for 23 dragons. Now there is only space for 8, and the children of the air are losing ground. My sister may have to give up this place eventually when the human attacks from the fishing town below get more frequent.* Her mother sighed. *Problematic though it is, your father’s mountain seemed safer longer-term.*
*Is that why father keeps going to help that settlement of humans, mother?*
Kharriana frowned. *I used to question your father on that myself, Rargesteyae.* The older dragon shook her head. *I worried about his trust in them, and I still do, but that is a part of who your father is. Your father was partly raised by humans, and I think that experience has led him to see humans as somewhat friendly.*
Her daughter cocked her head sideways. *Father’s a little foolish?*
*No. I used to think that, but no, he’s not. He’s done some amazing things with his ties to his friends, including humans.*
*They helped him rescue the Jutrstra!* Asaewath cut in.
*They did, and our people owe a great debt to them for that. Whether it atones for the thousands of other crimes their people did to our people is another story.*
*There was also the gryphons right?* The son continued.
*Yes, the gryphon war. Your father would have died in our last war with them if he had not the friendship of their leader. As it was he brought peace between the Children of the Sky and the feathered ones.* Kharriana forced a smile. *His strange allies do bring rewards. What I worry though is that your father will eventually lose sight of who is a friend and who is a foe.*
*He wants to help everyone he can!* Asaewath chirped. *That’s why he’s a hero.*
*But can you right all the wrongs in the world?* His mother looked down sternly, casting a dark shadow over her son. *I don’t think so.*
Asaewath seemed shaken, though he stood his ground. *But you have to do what you can, right?*
Kharriana broke into a smile. *You are your father’s son.* She beamed, before adding, *I honestly don’t know. Sometimes you have to protect yourself.*
With that, she gestured her children to follow her deeper into the caverns.
*Now enough talk about your father. He’s busy playing with his human friends, but that means I get time to teach you all how to fish!*
*Yay!* Both Rargesteyae and Asaewath exclaimed in unison, running after their mother.
*I want you to come back with the biggest sea creature you can find!*
*I’m going to catch a capricorn!*
*Well I’m going to catch a karken!*
*Dad will be so jealous.*
