The cold water poured down across the deck of the Emerald Storm as the airship banked hard through the narrow canyon, the spring rain obscuring the region in a fine mist. Gwee stood, eagerly on the deck, unphased by the storm as the ship plowed through the sheets of water. Besides the Winterborn Treefolk, a small bundle of cloth and fur known as Marie shivered, literally resembling a drowned rat.
"How can you POSSIBLY be enjoying this?" the sodden Rodencian muttered from her miserable little pile huddled up tight against the gunnel.
"This is all very exciting!" Gwee exclaimed happily "Soaring through the air, in this marvelous place! There is nothing like this in the Great Forest, only a few gorges and creekbeds. Nothing as wide and deep as these canyons! And I've never gone this fast either!"
Her words were punctuated by the crashing of stone against splintering wood as Kathalia gave the helm a sharp spin, her airship slamming into a rock outcropping as she cut the corner too sharply, the ship diving hard deeper into the canyon
"Try catching me now, you Rodencian sloth! You'd have to be crazy to follow us!" The dragoness let out a deranged laugh as the ship banked hard to the right. Gwee, not sure why her friend was laughing, joined in awkwardly.arie clung to the gunnel tighter. Marie clung tighter to the wood, her claws digging into the wet wood.
"And that" Kathalia smirked "is how its... Shattered Gods, she's not giving up chase?!?
The larger ship made the tight turn with an impossibly smooth turn, bearing down on the Emerald Storm. Its captain stood at the front of the deck, crimson uniform and flowing blonde hair brilliantly contrasted with the grey sky behind her. Unlike the drenched Marie, the figure on the deck seemed untouched by the rain, a picture of control and grace. Gwee's sharp eyes could make out the triumphant smirk crossing the pirate-hunters rat-like muzzle.
"Oh no, I am not giving you the satisfaction..." Kathalia swung the ship once more, the vessel launching upwards like a spear. The dragoness threw her hand straight outwards, her half-cape fluttering in the winds as she dramatically proclaimed "Launch the Dragon's Fang!!!!!"
Gwee smiled, tilting her head. Marie blinked in confusion. Kathalia stood in her dramatic pose for an awkward moment, her eyes pleading with her crew to respond. "The... Dragon's Fang? The big Bunnian contraption that we just stole? The reason Enora is chasing us?" Gwee opened her mouth, looked puzzled and closed it again. The drowning rat next to her shook her head.
"I have no idea how that thing works. Bunnian technology is beyond me."
"Treefolk don't have anything that complicated."
"Take the wheels, Gwe..." Kathalia began as she swung down from the aftcastle, glancing at the excited Treefolk, practically bouncing with anticipation, "...Marie. Just... just keep her on course... and don't kill us." She ran down the deck, sliding down the railing and disappearing below deck. Steam shot out from the sides of the ship and smoke billowed out from the hold doors that the dragon had vanished down. Marie clung to the wheels as if letting go would send her plummeting into the canyon below. Kathalia re-emerged.
"I really need a proper crew..." she glanced at the miserable-looking Rodencian scholar and the exuberant, but useless on an airship Treefolk. She shouldered Marie out of the way and spun the wheel once more, the Emerald Storm now aimed directly at the larger ship. She bellowed once more "Unleash... The Dragon's Fang!!!!"
"Didn't you already..."
"Let me have this Marie."
The black-hulled ship shot upwards, the steam from the Bunnian device spraying into the canyon. The Ram extended from the front of the tiny ship, glistening in the spring rain and impaled itself into the larger vessel. Above, Enora bellowed a command and the ship pulled back, deflecting the worst of the attack. Metal and wood splintered as the ships crashed together. For a moment as they passed, Kathalia and the enemy captain locked eyes, Kathalia sending over a mock salute. Enora scowled as the Emerald Storm pulled away, their escape all but guaranteed. The ship climbed up through the storm, emerging into an endless sea of blue sky above the roiling clouds. Gwee's eyes widened at the sight, sparkling with the enthusiasm of a child.
"It's... It's beautiful."
"Welcome Gwee..." Kathalia said with a smile "to the realm of dragons."
A commission from the amazingly talented https://www.furaffinity.net/user/yuukiame featuring Gwae as she appears in https://www.furaffinity.net/user/ivanks/ 's World of Nova, Gwee Winterborn, an Treefolk Exile. It's weird writing a version of Gwae without her accent. I am super happy with how great this commission turned out and highly recommend checking out both Yuuki and Ivank's galleries.
