Argh, I can't stand having my windows separated like that. Mine have to be both on the left, and even then, I make them disappear when I'm working.

hmm i always wondered about that ... i wish i could have the layers on the right side.. i can see the tablet menu hiding on the left side and would pop up sometimes when i was moving around layers. drove me crazy till i turned the menu off.

Not to speak for the artist, but I think the reason for the artist's choice is in your question. Texture. A great deal of digital age art lacks texture, which makes it feel flat, artificial, or unanchored. Just my two cents.
