Towering over the battlefield at six feet and eight inches, Duncan Spearsholt was both an outstanding commander and a skilled swordsman. His chief flaw lay in his occasional psychological instability, making him unpredictable and ruthless. While this served him well as a commander, in politics it could be disastrous. Mercifully, this was alleviated considerably by the attentions of his lover Brigid O'Leary, probably the most famous Water-Mage of her day. While she lacked Duncan's harsher instincts, Brigid was both politically astute and empathetic, allowing her to negotiate the web of jealousies and intrigue that threatened to entangle her lover as he rose up the ranks of the King's Army.
