Some more random creature design, this one was vaguely influenced by something a friend and I were chatting about.
Vaguely goblin or gremlin-like weasel-ish creature, probably something I'll use as an alien race to populate seedier locations and spaces with a ton of alien races present, such as spaceports and space stations. I'm not sure what, if any, world they will actually call home, perhaps like the Starfarers they've just been a nomadic race for thousands of years, to the point where it's their way of life now, or their ancestors were scooped up from some lesser-developed world at some point as slave labor or something before escaping or being liberated and becoming a space-faring race with no memory of "home", or perhaps their homeworld was subjected to some sort of disaster, war, or invasion in the distant past. Wherever they came from, they're now a fairly common sight throughout the galaxy.
I imagine these guys being scavengers and scrappers much of the time, dealing in trading junk and salvaged goods; or working as hired thugs, mercenaries, or general laborers and unskilled workers.
That's not to say they're necessarily unintelligent or unskilled, however, as despite the stereotypes of them being sleazy, untrustworthy, dirty scavengers and thieves, they are fairly clever and good at problem-solving and figuring out how to get themselves in to--and out of--all sorts of trouble.
As for the knife... no matter how advanced technology gets, I really doubt there will be much that really surpasses the simplicity, effectiveness, reliability and versatility of a metal blade, both as a weapon and a tool.
