You are absolutely correct. If you want to predispose yourself to having an accident, hanging something from your rear-view mirror is a good way to do it. It not only blocks your field of view, but it distracts you from something you really should be paying attention to.

I always liked(NOT!) seeing a 'flash' from another car - a CD swinging around and reflecting the sun, wondering how soon before that flash blinds the driver of that car and hurts/kills someone.

My first car stereo with USB support made me realize that some USB sticks should not be used to hold my music. I had (still have one on my desk right now) some Verbatim sticks with bright blue LEDs that flash as data is read. Imagine night driving with random blue flashes making you check your mirrors for a cop that is pulling you over ...

Oh yeah,,,I forgot the fad of advertising you had a CD player in your car by hanging the disks from the rear view mirror. Probably because I never had a car with a CD player until they were starting to be displaced by USB sticks and Bluetooth.

and isn't it just the truth...

I do worry that this sort of thing is just going to continue on and on... as soon as our bodies beat it back, they'll (whoever they are) will just let another of the 'wee buggers' out of its test tube...
