The AI in this game is derivative of Goal Oriented Action Planning, seen in the game "F.E.A.R." How it works is the programmer assigns each character 2 goals; provide as much of a threat to the enemy as it can, while also minimizing the threat that the enemy poses to them. Throughout the environment are scattered "smart objects". These are objects that contain a list of animations that can be performed with them. Each of those animations change the state of the world and affect the goals. The AI compares each animation and how it affects the world around them. It then tries to do the one that helps them achieve their goal the best.
In this picture, you can see Daram picking up a rock. If used in a fight, the rock can increase the amount of damage Daram's ram can do. As such, it increases the threat that he poses to any enemies in the area.
