I can't help but think about how they can't leave now. Assuming they're lost in a desert, they were within an inch of their lives when they found the oasis. They probably couldn't leave even before becoming immobile. The desert would cook their enlarged bodies immediately, and even traveling at night they wouldn't get very far before growing exhausted and crawling back.
