It was always interesting to me that throughout history many leaders would take it upon themselves to lead an army. For as many examples there is of this being a good thing there are more if not equal examples of it being rather bad or at the very least an unnecessary risk! However, sometimes public opinion is better than being the perfect fit for a battlefield commander.
Thankfully for his subjects, Verith does happen to be a proficient commander and excellent strategist. It would be difficult to hash out an empire among rising and establish powers if he were not.
Seems expansion was on the brain, actually.
