Kicked this concept around awhile before making it work here.
The Get Along Gang was actually based on an 80's greeting card line. As a CG sequel fizzled out around 2005, their main legacy was a (2D) Saturday morning TV series, which was a massive step down from the pilot prime-time special.
It was......typical for the time. It should have been called the Go Along With It Gang, since compliance was encouraged over free thinking. Still, the character designs were cute, and somehow this stuck with me more than most series of the time. And I will debate anyone who says the pilot wasn't pretty awesome XD
So I wanted to draw a modernization/aging up, and in doing so I realized WHY I liked the show so much.
Zipper, the cat dude, was a jock and tough guy. I believe one episode even noted he was a reformed bully. But he hung out with the other non-jocks, and seemed basically BFFs with Bingo, the get-rich-quick (read: brains over brawn) beaver.
I was still the shrimpy runt who liked jocks, didn't know why, and didn't KNOW any IRL. I just...was really pleased to see one being friendly. This was before media, high school, and reality crushed the hell out of that concept. No no no. Jocks can't ever be a nerd's friend.
The characters were like...ten or eleven I guess, so I can't exactly say he was an early crush. But he was a toon friend at a time I needed more.
This is why people retreat to furries for fantasy, I guess.
Zipper/Woolma/Montgomery/Dottie/Bingo/Portia ©...um...not sure who at this point.

I had a couple of the books as a really young child, and I gotta say that my affinity for several of the characters was... strong. "Crush" is probably the right word, - insofar as a kindergartner can have one - particularly for the rabbit and alligator characters. ...Wait, those were the bullies? Er... Well, offset them a bit with Montgomery Moose.
I'm honestly glad that this is tame, and that the fandom has left them alone. Childhood corruption can be fun, but TGAG reaches a bit too far back for anything past an "All Grown Up" treatment for me.

I'm gonna have to look up the special cause I'm intrigued. Zipper being a jock-esqe cat is amusing and the Zipper the Beaver is just so cute. Yes, Jock's and nerds can be friends, or even the jock CAN be a nerd sometimes. Curious on Montgomery but maybe it's just how you did his puppy-dog eyes... or pec cleavage~
