In the original telling it was a fairy who actually wiggled her way into raising him while his mother was at war, fell in love with him and then got royaly pissed off when she was told no you can't marry my son you took it uponyourself to raise...(plus she was ancient and ugly as hell). I can link you to a podcast i listen too. Its first three episodes are the very original iterations.

Fair. As much as they called her an enchantress. She has the star wand and everything sooo... I think it was disneya way to keep it to the lore while still helping younger audiences who aren't versed in fae being dangerous tricksters anymore got it. Sorry if i came off as rude.
