I grew up with a cat and she was an ASSHOLE.
I swear she was bipolar, she'd lay on top of the couch and lick six-year-old me's hair after I got out to the shower. Which was fine. Until she decided she was done licking, and instead of just going away to do something else, would decide that I was an asshole for sitting there and she'd smack me with her paw--and sometimes claws.
She's the reason I do not like cats.
On the other hand, the worst things the dog ever did to me were take up the whole damn bed despite not being *that* big, or waking me up by kicking me in the face--and I never understood why I always woke up to find him asleep with his ass pointed at my head when I knew he fell asleep with his head near mine.
I'd get back at him though. I figured out if I gently teased the fur between his toe pads and big pad with my finger, this tickled him, and he'd pull his paw back and try to eat it.

Maybe I just had a psycho cat? That was the only cat I ever owned.
Tickle tickle!
He starts right off with a boggle and he has his teeth grinding that whole time, such a happy rat.
I thought being ticklish is why dogs do that kicking thing when you scratch certain areas too, but I wasn't sure so I looked it up! Turns out it's a "scratch reflex" and it's something to do with stimulating nerves in just the right spot, sorta like an itch? So sorta like tickling, I guess, but not quite. Maybe that's the same thing that happened when I touched those hairs, his reflexes told him it was some sort of irritation to remove?

SO DAMN CUTE
thats interesting, I guess I never really thought about why they do that kicking thing :o
i have heard scratching an itch, for humans, releases dopamine! which is why you want to keep on scratching, even if it hurts.
and that the urge itself isnt very well understood

Up until maybe a year or so ago I wasn't too fond of rodents at all. It took the Baluchistan Pygmy Jerboa to change my opinion of them.
It's a chicken nugget with legs!
I guess I always thought the kick was a response to a "tickling" sensation at first, but my dog would also do it if you scratched his back in certain spots, especially around where his back met his tail, so I thought maybe it was a general "I like this" sort of thing.
Maybe it's time to research tickling and what it actually is, my guess is that it's sort of like an involuntary response to what the nerves perceive as an irritant of some sort?
