Pierce is a Progenitor (setting-specific race for a sci-fi setting my mate and I have been developing). He was born a dragon, but he had progenitor DNA that allowed him to ascend; it's more accurate to say that he's now a swarm of nanites with a biological component. He can be whatever he wants and reshape himself at will. He wasn't born with those wings, after all.

What's important to note is that he can easily hide what he is. The ref is him showing off, but he's not one to flaunt what he is. Doing so is dangerous since the previous progenitors that remained in the galaxy were killed by the Legati (advance feline race), and they wouldn't hesitate to eradicate him. But the long game is his game. He's immortal.
