I've heard from some people that they found this arc to be uninteresting and were just riding it out, but I think it's a necessary part of the plot to flesh out more of the adult characters since a majority of the time is spent with the new generation. Who the hell thought that this was something you 'wait out'? This was both great and incredibly important tbh, I actually wanna see so much more! Even storytelling wise anything about his mom is automatically important seeing as we don't really know much about her and seeing where John was compared to how he is now adds an additional layer to all that making us ask 'what happened to him?'
