Drawing Sara tends to help me release a lot of tension. I’ve had this character since I was little and she has gone through many character evolutions. A year ago I was only drawing her in one pose over and over again. While that was one post of her walking that I liked, I realized that it was also very plane, redundant, and generally boring. So I’ve started practicing things that I hope are more emotional. Mostly based on things I see my favorite comic books doing with their characters poses.
I realize that her foot in the back could be shaped better, but this was also all done in ball point bic pen. No erasing. It’s a challenge I’ve set for myself, by using pen, I’m having to sketch much more carefully and pay attention more to finer details in planning. It’s also forcing me to either use the mistakes that I make, hide them, or keep them for future reference. I find the fact that I can’t erase while sketching in pen much more relaxing too. If I had an eraser I’d scrutinize over details. With pen I make it dark to a point, then I’ve had to teach myself to be able to walk away from some sections and leave them alone.
Sara is © to me.
