Fun to shoot. Cool to own.
The Ruger 57. Perhaps the first handgun chambered in the fast flying 5.7x28mm round that's not the FN Five seveN, and goes for a LOT less money. Nothing against the FN, its just that $1500+ is a lot to spend, especially on a handgun.
Although the Ruger MSRP is $800 or so, they can be had for less; not one but two dealers around here have them for $650 or less.

I agree with you 100%
The ammo though....its pricey but not stupid; a 50 round box of Federal was $28 and change, and the FN branded stuff was about $31, so not too bad.
The Ruger 57 and AR-57 upper can give you a long gun and a sidearm combination, and will cost about the same as just one of the FN guns. Nothing against FN, but some guns are just too pricey.

Indeed.
I was able to get two HKs well below MSRP at gunshows. One was a USP, and the other a P2000. Of note, the P2000 was in .357 Sig, and came with a barrel to shoot .40 (and you only need to swap barrels to change calibers).
And even at MSRP, both of those are less than a Five seveN.

Same here.
Plus, with the Five seveN consistently priced around $1500 or so, the $800 MSRP of the Ruger makes getting in the 5.7 game much easier (and as I said above, it can be had for well below MSRP)
Ruger does not recommend reloaded ammo for it; 5.7x28 is a high velocity load, so it might be something most hobbyist reloaders aren't used to in a handgun round.
The Ruger's barrel is 4.94 inches long, while the Five-seveN's is 4.8 inches. Its not by much at all, but the Ruger's is the longer of the two.
