Romeo's Dive
Romeo broke the surface of the underwater cave and took a great gasp of air. Spelunking like this was a pastime he rarely got to indulge in, and he relished in the clean, untouched air that greeted his lungs while treading water. He noted some ground across the crystal clear water surface, and swam over to it to dry off.
The fox shook out his strandy purple hair, and then rattled his body to sling the water out of his thick white and blue fur, and wrung out his long, floofy tail. After he was sufficiently dry, he took a look around his surroundings, and let out a surprised whistle.
“This… this is the most beautiful cave I’ve seen so far!” Romeo thought to himself, while sparkling gems of many bright colors reflected off his widened pupils. He licked his jowls and rushed over to the cave wall, eager to claim some of these treasures for himself. He tugged and he pushed on several jagged sparkling rocks, but could not dislodge any of them.
Frustrated, Romeo noticed a long, red gem, sticking straight out of the wall, and approached it curiously. This gem didn’t look quite like the others. For one, it lacked the luster the other specimens dazzled his eyes with. For another, it smelled… like wood? He grabbed the long, thin gem and pulled.
The gem shifted with an echoing crack, and the groan of stone grinding on stone flooded the chamber. Romeo’s eyes went wide, and he crouched down fearfully, not sure what to expect. He traced the stone grinding to another wall, and watched as a secret door slid open, revealing a stone table.
Romeo stood stark still for a minute or two, before gathering his courage and approaching the secret room. As he drew closer, he noticed what appeared to be a person laying on the table, unconscious. She had blue, translucent skin that revealed a strange jelly like substance behind it. Romeo took notice of her tentacle like hair, finned hands, thin, see through clothes. He shook off the initial shock from the sight of such an impossible creature, and rushed to her side.
“Hey! Are you okay?? Are you hurt?” He crouched to her side and tried to shake her awake. After a few seconds, the strange girl began to stir.
“W-what? Where am I?” The groggy girl turned to make contact with Romeo’s orange and blue eyes, and after a second of processing, began to panic. Her eyes went wide and she began to scramble to the other side of the secret chamber.
“Who are you! You shouldn’t be here! This place is dangerous! You must leave now, before it’s too late!” The panicked blue girl pleaded with Romeo, genuine fear in her eyes.
Romeo glanced around the secret room, and then stuck his head out back to the main chamber. After a quick look around, he returned to the translucent girl, and shrugged.
“Doesn’t look dangerous to me… We’re the only ones here. Are you sure you’re okay? How long have you been here? I’ve been diving in these caves for months, and I’ve never met someone… uh…” he paused, unsure of how to phrase this properly. “I’ve never met someone quite like you!” He grinned widely, and flicked the tip of his tail side to side affectionately.
The panicked girl began to catch her breath, and nodded to her would be rescuer, and cleared her throat.
“You *are* in danger here. There are dangerous creatures in these depths who are after me, and will not hesitate to kill or devour anyone whom they determine to be standing in their way, whether they intend to interfere or not. In other words, anyone near me is in constant danger. Now that I’ve been awakened, they will come for me! You must flee while you still can.” The anomalous girl begged.
Romeo shrugged again and smiled warmly at his new friend. “Oh, relax, we have time. I swam for 2-3 minutes underwater in a tunnel to get here, and I didn’t see any dangerous creatures. Anyway, who are you? My name is Romeo Del Zorro, but you can call me Ro! What’s your name?” He asked excitedly.
“My… my name? How can you be concerned about such a trivial thing while such terrifying ocean creatures make their way here at this very minute? Well, if you must know, my name is… my name… is?” She paused and looked away, concern spreading on her face. “I… don’t remember! But that’s not important! You *have* to get out of here!”
“You don’t remember your name? That’s okay, maybe it’s time for a new name! What kind of name suits you? Hmmm… I’m thinking… Jelly-ann!” His tail swooshed side to side excitedly, and his grin peaked.
“J… Jelly-ann? I… I see.” The blue girl looked toward the floor and blushed. It was then that Romeo noticed some strange, glowing lights under the surface of the girls skin, suspended in the jelly. They rose in brightness, as she drug her toes in the drug shyly. His eyes went wide with adoration just before squealing and hopping in excitement.
“Oh my gosh, you light up!? That’s amazing! You’re so cool! Will you please be my friend?” he exclaimed.
“...Friend? I suppose--” Jelly-ann was cut off by a deafening echoing roar that filled the cave and shook the very walls. Fear flooded her face, and her jelly faded to a paler blue.
Romeo nearly jumped out of his skin, and flattened himself against the wall on the inside of the secret chamber, and poked his head out to observe.
He still saw nothing, but could not help but notice a frightening, aggressive aura hovering in the air. Something was coming, fast.
“Oh shit, what is tha-- mmf!?” He was cut off by his new friend whipping him in the back of the head with one of her tentacles, and wrapping it around his eyes like a VR visor. Her bioluminescent lights began to flicker in front of his eyes, and before he could even resist, he could feel his thoughts flying away. His mind was no longer his own, and he lacked even the capacity to question it.
“Get OUT of here!” Romeo’s friend turned assailant commanded in his ear.
“Yes… my queen…” came his empty, monotone response. Romeo-slave dived into the water, and made his way back to the cave entrance, mindlessly leaving his new friend behind.
