Their eyes are JUST starting to open, we can see them but they are still heavy-lidded. As you can see the little guys now have all their fur in!
Their names are: Sushi, Tamago, Ebi, Unagi and Nigiri.
Sushi has the nick-nam Jumper, because he's more active than the others and loves to explore even though he can't see!

lol ive heard stories.... one guy used scalding water to thaw his rats and wondered why they smelled bad and his snake wouldnt take them....
its also such a shame that rats in most cases are much better pets than snakes, and something so cute can also be so yummy... i mean if puppies tasted like bacon.... O.O

do it lol, even my grown boys will do it sometimes ( learned to scruff em real good for medicine and when one bit the other's balls x.x)
just cruff em and at that age they should instinctively tuck thier hind feet in, if not give em a tickle and they should.
omg lol i gotta get back to volenteering at the reptile rescue, the stupid volenteers that took my place didnt know squat so now all the rodents are underfed >.< got them a sack of peanuts for a good dose of protein and fat. You have any sudgestions for a cheap fattener-upper for skinny rodents?

Yogurt, avacado (don't give them the meat closest to the pit) soy baby formula, nutrical (aka "rat-crack"), switching to the HT specifically for pregger rats if they are preg or nursing, ensure (mine love chocolate), and small amounts of cheap goat cheese are all ways I do it.
another thing you gotta try for enrichment's sake... its a little blood sport i call " put a handfull of live crickets in a tank with your rats, sit back, and watch the lulz"
rats also looove mealworms, and i grow them for them as well, albeit the legs and exo sometimes get in thier teeth so theyl sometimes smack thier lips/gums a bit afterwards.
Also another thing i found helped the baytril go down- pure maple syrup.

If I recall correctly, rodents tend to rely on smell and touch more than sight. I remember seeing a test between a cat and a mouse. A glass sheet was laid over a visible drop, then the two animals turned loose to walk on it. The mouse ran right out over the glass, but the cat was really hesitant to follow.
That might explain how "jumper" perceives the world right now, if his eyes aren't open yet. Hard to tell in the picture, have their whiskers grown in?

Yuppers, the whiskers are present very early on, 'tis the first hairs that come in. You are correct ^_^ it's also why rats--particularly wild ones are thigamorphic, that is they need their body to touch things as they scurry about. If you observe wildrats you'll notice they hug walls and corners. Pet rats have dropped that behavior some, but you still see it in some really nervous rescues.
pink eyes rats even more, theyre REALLY bad sighted. ive learned they wont know if your holding food a foot away from them if they cant smell it, so when training i give a little blow thier way so they can smell it, plus a verbal "yumyumyumyum" so they learn to come to a verbal cue.
hehe, good idea. I've not really had a problem with my PEW adults except that adorable sway motion thing they do ^__^ I'm going to start offering them some of the soy formula I put out for mum--although she's so greedy with it I'm not sure how I'll get her to share!
LOL my smaller rat ( i really need to play with him more, hes more an add on to keep Nochez happy) has learned nochez won't share; he keeps turning so his butt is in his face at all times. The lil bugger has learned to jump OVER nochez's back and pounce right on the food that way o.o
Wild rats get really big depending on the area. In cities especially they can get substantially larger than any domestic rat. That said, many are small, probably due to a lack of easily accessible food.
Apocalypse is the half wild, and she's the size of an un neutered male rat, but no fat on her at all. She is a totally different proposition. She can, when out in the play pen not only lift the top, she can lift it when there are a pair of combat boots on top of the corner. She can also monkey bar with just her forearms across the entire top of the 4 food play pen. Her sister was just as big. HUGE strong super rats. Very beautiful as well, but not something you want to happen deliberately.

Boy are they getting big! My guys are on day 10. Unfortunately, in them getting so big and momma being so small, we lost 2 of them :(. It was hard to take but the other's are strong and are doing great. I have a bunch of black berk males and one black self male, as a blue self male! They really are looking great :)
Aww I'm sorry to hear that. Have you tried separating them into two piles? That can really help the runts along. There are instructions on how to do it on a lot of the rat sites out there.
I love blues, they're so pretty. We were hoping for a black berk in the litter, but as you can see, we didn't win that lottery. Oh well!

I actually took the bigger, stronger ones (that are now really moving and going to the bathroom on their own) out and put them under a heat lamp and left the smaller ones in a pile with mommy for about an hour. Mommy didn't even go in there with them. It was very bizarre. The weakest girl died this morning, so only 2 girls left. The others look like they did eat last night, but not as much as normal. I plan to put a small bowl of formula in with them and hope the larger guys will drink there if mom is going to start giving them less milk. If it gets really bad, then syringe feeding it'll be. I don't want to lose any more of these babies... They are so incredible and haven't even started living yet. Wish me luck...
Aww. I don't have experience, but I have heard that rex and hairless mothers often have problems giving milk, although if you get them to the 14 day point on milk you can supplement by syringe-feeding them the formula. Basically try to get them to lick it off a small syringe, you should be able to find one at the pet store in the bird aisle for "hand raising." hopefully the dish will work as you said but a more direct method might have more success.
Yea the dish wasn't gunna work. I used a small feeding tube that I have from working with rehab and fed each of them last night. Sadly, we are down to 8 of them, however the 8 remaining babies are the strongest and healthiest. I believe she was having trouble with all of them and so some got weak and couldn't get to the food. I checked in the middle of the night with plans of feeding them again and she was nursing all 8 of them, and being very protective once again. I will continue to supplement if I feel they are getting weaker, but what I saw last night and this morning was very promising. I took her little house away and she wouldn't leave them: she actually pushed them all further under her. I did get her off to count them and they look great. Sadly, sometimes some babies aren't meant to survive... and she did the right thing by moving them away from the litter and in some cases "disposing" of the ones that had passed herself.
Please don't breed just for fun...get her a same sex partner or the others neutered. This was an accidental litter. I foster for a local rescue, and we get in unwanted babies all the time--it's the same for shelters across the globe, America, Canada, UK, Germany, New Zealand....All have a major excess of pet rats and the result is that many are either euthanized, end up fed live to snakes, or worse. And there IS worse than the snake feeding. Some of the worst atrocities against animals happen to rats because many people just see them as pests and have no problems being cruel. If you want to handle babies, I highly recommend fostering for your local rescue or shelter, or helping pregnant rats find a home.
If you don't believe me, here's the rats in shelters in your area:
http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?animal_type=Small&pet_breed=rat&location=Georgia&startsearch=SearchKeep in mind, most of those listings are for multiple rats due to litters, meaning the # is much higher than 500 or so and more like several thousand being as the lowball average on litter size is 10.

My girl has her own separate cage and is getting a female cage mate. No worries!
I actually do plan sometime in the future, but not in the foreseeable future, to let her be with a certain one of my males. Both are our favorite rats so hopefully their offspring will be. We'd definitely keep a couple and make sure the rest go to good homes. We screen and stuff just for fish even. There will be no dumping at any shelters or shops, and no more than one single litter.
I do wish people would stop breeding their pets all the time just for the sake of doing it, or "sometimes you just wanna get your pet laid" or whatever. I do want to have one litter though, and have more awesome rats like the two of mine.

You are aware you're COMPLETELY contradicting yourself?
You want to breed two rats from unknown lineage because they're "awesome rats" and you want babies...yet you're against the people who breed their animals "for the sake of doing it"...it's irresponsible breeding either way.....you're not breeding for health, to expand good strong rat lines, for show, for food, for any of that....you're breeding two completely unremarkable animals (so what, they're nice...many rats are friendly and/or pretty) because you want cute rat babies that will be difficult to rehome to non-snake food homes and will overstress an already flooded market...
it's just one litter......
one rat litter can be 18 babies, considering the average person wants 2 rats tops and they'd have to be the same gender you're looking at 9 homes to check or possibly more if you have uneven numbers looking for homes that want another. So you need to find nine people who want rats, that's nine people (or more) who need to be home checked. So after going through the kids, the "pet accessory" types, the college student who wants to sneak it into the dorm, and the mother who wants to get her little kids pets, you've found homes that don't simply want them as snake food. But wait, those babies were so friendly that those homes want to breed them. Now that "just one litter" has resulted in a potential 324 unremarkable babies.....
on another note.....if you love this particular rat why on EARTH would you put her through a pregnancy?
